On October 29, 2021, the meeting”Grazia Deledda, the woman who put no limits on women” was held in Rome as part of the vast program of celebrations promoted by the Province of Nuoro, together with the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, at the Municipality of Nuoro, at the University Consortium of Nuoro, at the MAN Museum and at the Foundation of Sardinia, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous writer from Nuoro, the only Italian woman to have received the Nobel Prize for literature.
«The example of Grazia Deledda offers us the best antidote to indifference. She was able to anticipate the battles of civilization and gender equality that are central to the Italian and European political agenda today ». Thus the extraordinary administrator of the Province of Nuoro, Costantino Tidu, promoter of the meeting organized in the Senate of the Republic, in the presence of the President Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati and the Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the writer from Barbagia.
“We have set up the most important project ever carried out in Sardinia, in Italy and in the world to celebrate the greatness of Grazia Deledda, – continues Tidu -, with the aim of reaching the general public, with a view to intercultural and intergenerational dialogue” .
The Rome conference, after the opening event held last September 28 in Nuoro, is the second in chronological order of a rich program of events put in place by the institutional committee led by the Province of Nuoro. The one-year program is characterized by a significant number of traveling events and appointments in Italy and abroad, obviously without neglecting Sardinia, which remains the beating heart of the celebrations.
In the Sala Capitolare of Palazzo della Minerva the meeting was opened by the President of the Senate , who underlined how “the celebrations of Deleddian are an important opportunity to return to reflect on the path of women’s emancipation”. On the same wavelength Senator Gianni Marilotti, who recalled how Deledda was a profound connoisseur of the archaic values of the Sardinian matriarchy, however knowing how to deviate from it in the actions of her life.
Among the most significant interventions that of the President of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Rectors of the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari . For Christian Solinas, Deledda “was and is Sardinia” and was able to raise the island on the international scene, attracting the attention of the greatest intellectuals and writers of the time. The President went on to state that “Deledda’s attachment to her roots, her sharing of a feeling of identity, her collective feeling of the Sardinians made of history, traditions, customs and traditions, have guided the work of the writer, with that modesty typical of great intellects ». Francesco Mola and Gavino Mariotti, on the other hand, recalled the role of the writer’s literary landscapes, as factors for the enhancement of the territories, also through the projects of cultural parks inspired by the Nuorese author.
The artistic director Anthony Muroni recalled how the conference in the Senate of the Republic represents a solemn moment to remember “a writer who in the nineteenth century did not accept the role that was given to women, which is why she courageously embarked on the path of self-determination, proposed also through the female figures present in his books. The year-long program of events has the ambition of bringing this great writer everywhere, who has anticipated the times in a path, that of women’s rights, which has not yet ended ».
The interventions, interspersed with readings by Monica Corimbi and Francesca Grivel, were closed by the Minister for Culture, Dario Franceschini, for whom “Grazia Deledda represents an emblematic modernity”.
Exceptionally modern, it must be made known to young people.
Grazia Deledda had to fight against prejudices and misunderstandings both in life and after death.
